The short answer
Sajdah tilawat (sujud al-tilawah) is the single prostration that the four schools' works below describe at certain Quran verses, made by the reciter and the listener. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, prostrated on reciting Surah An-Najm (Sahih al-Bukhari 1070, graded sahih). Al-Quduri's Hanafi Mukhtasar calls it wajib; Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali works call it sunnah, with a Maliki commentary also giving fadilah (a merit).
How do you perform sajdah tilawat?
Each school's own book gives its own sequence, so each sits in its own row. Read the row for the school you follow; the rows are not steps to combine.
| School and work | Before you start, then the steps |
|---|---|
| Hanafial-Quduri, Mukhtasar; al-Kasani, Bada'i al-sana'i | Al-Kasani makes every condition of the prayer a condition here: wudu or ghusl, a body, clothes and place free of impurity, covering, facing the qibla (when reciting on the ground in normal circumstances) and intention. He does not require an opening takbir (tahrimah). 56
Al-Quduri says there is no tashahhud and no salam. |
| MalikiIbn Abi Zayd, al-Risalah; al-Abi al-Azhari, al-Thamar al-Dani | Al-Risalah says the prostration is made only with wudu. Al-Thamar al-Dani requires what other prayers require: purity from hadath (the state that wudu or ghusl removes) and from impurity, and facing the qibla. 78
Al-Risalah gives no salam. Al-Thamar al-Dani calls raising the hands disliked and gives no tashahhud on the well-known view. |
| Shafi'ial-Nawawi, Minhaj al-talibin | Al-Nawawi says the conditions of the prayer apply. 9
Al-Nawawi calls the opening takbir a condition on the sound view, and the salam a condition on the more apparent view. |
| HanbaliIbn Qudamah, Umdat al-fiqh and al-Mughni | Al-Mughni requires what voluntary prayer requires: purity from hadath and from impurity, covering, facing the qibla and intention. 1011
Al-Mughni reports that narrations from Ahmad differ on whether the salam is required, that one salam suffices, and that there is no tashahhud. |
The rows differ most at the end: the Shafi'i and Hanbali rows give a salam (al-Mughni reports narrations that differ on whether it is required), and the Hanafi and Maliki rows give none. If a row leaves you unsure, ask a teacher you trust.
Is sajdah tilawat wajib or sunnah?
The schools split on this, and on who it is for. A listener here means someone who sets out to listen; a hearer simply happens to hear.
| School and work | Ruling, and who it is for |
|---|---|
| Hanafial-Quduri, Mukhtasar | Wajib, in al-Quduri's Mukhtasar. The reciter and the hearer, whether or not the hearer meant to listen. 5 |
| Malikial-Abi al-Azhari, al-Thamar al-Dani | Sunnah, the view that Ibn 'Arafah's reasoning makes preferred; another view calls it fadilah (a merit). The reciter and the one who means to listen, not the mere hearer, as the well-known position. 8 |
| Shafi'ial-Nawawi, Minhaj al-talibin | Sunnah. The reciter and the listener, more strongly when the reciter prostrates. Al-Nawawi adds the hearer. 9 |
| HanbaliIbn Qudamah, Umdat al-fiqh and al-Mughni | Sunnah; al-Mughni calls it a stressed sunnah (sunnah mu'akkadah), not wajib. The reciter and the listener, not the hearer. 1011 |
Three reports in Sahih al-Bukhari bear on the question. 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, reports that the Prophet recited Surah An-Najm and prostrated in it, and everyone present prostrated except one man, who lifted a handful of pebbles or earth to his face and said that was enough for him. The report is graded sahih
1AuthenticSahih al-Bukhari 1070
Zayd ibn Thabit, may Allah be pleased with him, reports that he recited An-Najm to the Prophet, and the Prophet did not prostrate in it. The report, graded sahih, does not say why
2AuthenticSahih al-Bukhari 1073
The third report is about 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, not the Prophet. A man who was there reports that 'Umar recited Surah An-Nahl on the pulpit one Friday, came down at the prostration and prostrated, and the people prostrated with him. The next Friday he recited it again and, at the prostration, said these words, then did not prostrate:
إِنَّا نَمُرُّ بِالسُّجُودِ فَمَنْ سَجَدَ فَقَدْ أَصَابَ، وَمَنْ لَمْ يَسْجُدْ فَلاَ إِثْمَ عَلَيْهِ
In English: we come to the prostration; whoever prostrates has done right, and whoever does not, there is no sin on him. In an addition, Nafi', a Follower (of the generation after the Companions), reports from Ibn 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him: Allah has not made the prostration obligatory, unless we wish. The report is graded sahih
3AuthenticSahih al-Bukhari 1077
Ibn Qudamah's al-Mughni cites the Zayd and 'Umar reports for the Hanbali view that it is not wajib. 11 The reports describe what happened; the ruling in each school is the one its own work gives in the table.
Which verses have a sajdah?
Fifteen passages appear across the four works; each work gives its own count: al-Quduri, al-Muhadhdhab and Umdat al-fiqh fourteen, al-Risalah eleven, and al-Mughni fourteen on its first narration about Sad and fifteen on its second. Al-A'raf 7:206 is the first of them in the order of the mushaf (the written Quran), and all four works count it.

What happens when the verse comes during salah?
Each school's work adds its own rules for the prostration inside the prayer.
| School and work | What the work says |
|---|---|
| Hanafial-Quduri; al-Hidayah | When the imam recites a prostration verse, he prostrates and the follower prostrates with him. When the follower recites one, neither prostrates. Al-Hidayah adds that a prostration due inside the prayer and not made there is not made up outside it. 514 |
| Malikial-Risalah; al-Thamar al-Dani | Al-Risalah tells the one praying who prostrates at the end of Al-A'raf to stand, recite what is easy from Al-Anfal or elsewhere, then bow and prostrate. Al-Thamar al-Dani calls it disliked to recite a prostration verse deliberately in an obligatory prayer. 78 |
| Shafi'ial-Nawawi, Minhaj al-talibin | The imam and the one praying alone prostrate for their own recitation; the follower prostrates for his imam's. If the follower stays behind when the imam prostrates, or prostrates when the imam does not, al-Nawawi says his prayer is invalid. Takbir going down and rising, without raising the hands, and no sitting for rest. 9 |
| HanbaliIbn Qudamah, al-Mughni | Takbir going down and rising, inside the prayer as outside it. 11 |
How is it different from sujud al-sahw?
Sajdah tilawat answers a verse; sujud al-sahw answers a mistake in the prayer. Al-Nawawi's Minhaj gives the forgetfulness prostration as two prostrations like those of the prayer, however many the mistakes, placed in the new view between the tashahhud and the salam 9.
'Abdullah ibn Buhaynah, may Allah be pleased with him, reports that the Prophet stood up after two rak'ahs without sitting, and before the salam made two prostrations while sitting. The report is graded sahih
4AuthenticSahih al-Bukhari 1224
For when it is needed and how each school places it, see sajdah sahw.
What if I miss it, or have no wudu?
- Al-Kasani's Hanafi Bada'i al-sana'i says its obligation is not tied to the moment ('ala al-tarakhi), and gives that as the reason tayammum is not allowed for it when water is available (unless the person is ill). 6
- Al-Nawawi's Shafi'i Minhaj says that if a person did not prostrate and a long time has passed, he does not prostrate. 9
- Ibn Qudamah's Hanbali al-Mughni says that someone who hears the verse without purity is not required to make wudu or tayammum, because the prostration is tied to its cause and is not made once that has passed. 11
- The Maliki passages we read do not cover a missed prostration.
The first time I saw the imam go down into sujud in the middle of his recitation in Taraweeh, I was about ten and thought he had made a mistake. Everyone else went down with him, so I followed half a second late. My dad explained it on the walk home.
Try it: the reports and the works
Four checks, each with its source.
1In Sahih al-Bukhari 1077, who came down from the pulpit to prostrate one Friday, and did not prostrate the next?
Answer: 'Umar ibn al-Khattab. The acts and words in the report are 'Umar's, not the Prophet's. The line that Allah has not made the prostration obligatory is an addition that Nafi' reports from Ibn 'Umar. Source 3
2How many recitation prostrations does the Maliki al-Risalah count?
Answer: Eleven. Ibn Abi Zayd counts eleven, none of them in the mufassal, and his list does not include An-Najm, Al-Inshiqaq or Al-'Alaq. Source 7
3In al-Nawawi's Shafi'i Minhaj, what is the prostration at Sad?
Answer: A prostration of thanks, made outside the prayer. Al-Nawawi says Sad is not one of the fourteen but a prostration of thanks, recommended outside the prayer and prohibited inside it on the soundest view. Source 9
4According to al-Quduri's Hanafi Mukhtasar, how does the prostration end?
Answer: With takbir on rising, and no tashahhud or salam. Al-Quduri describes takbir, the prostration, then takbir on rising, and says there is no tashahhud and no salam. Source 5
Questions people ask
Can you do sajdah tilawat without wudu?
The Hanafi Bada'i al-sana'i, the Shafi'i Minhaj al-talibin and the Hanbali al-Mughni apply the conditions of the prayer, including purity, to the recitation prostration, and the Maliki al-Risalah says it is made only with wudu. Al-Mughni adds that someone who hears the verse without purity is not required to make wudu or tayammum for it. For your own circumstances, ask a scholar you trust.
Do I prostrate again if I repeat the same verse?
Al-Quduri's Hanafi Mukhtasar says one prostration covers a prostration verse repeated in one sitting. Al-Nawawi's Shafi'i Minhaj says that someone who repeats a verse in two sittings prostrates for each, and likewise in one sitting on the soundest view, counting one rak'ah as one sitting and two rak'ahs as two. The Maliki and Hanbali passages in our records do not address repetition, so we give no ruling on it.
Do I prostrate when I hear a recording of a prostration verse?
The passages recorded for this page do not address recorded recitation, so we give no answer here. Ask a scholar you trust about recordings and broadcasts.
