The short answer

This Quran quiz has ten comprehension questions, each with three choices and an explained answer. Each explanation points to the Quran passage it rests on, such as Al-Fatihah 1:2 and Al-Ikhlas 112:1, so you can read the verse again. It is a learning aid, not a translation or a judgement of anyone's faith.

How do I use this Quran quiz?

Choose one answer for each question, then read its explanation and the referenced passage. A surah is a chapter of the Quran. You can look up the passage before answering: this is reading practice, with no time limit.

The questions and answer choices are the Ilmwell team's learning aid. They are comprehension prompts, not a replacement translation of the Quran, and they are not an assessment of faith. Each explanation has a source reference so that you can return to the words being studied.

If you are working with a child or a study partner, ask which part of the passage supports the choice. You can also say "I want to check" before choosing. There is no need to turn the exercise into a competition.

I had recited Al-Ikhlas since I was small, but the first time I read the English slowly was on a train with my cousin, who asked me what one line meant. I could not tell her. We spent the rest of the journey reading it together.

Can you answer these ten questions?

Ten questions, three choices each. Pick an answer and its explanation appears. You can read the passages in the next section first: there is no time limit.

  1. 1Who receives praise in Al-Fatihah 1:2?

Answer: Allah. The praise is directed to Allah. The verse reads "Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds". The reciter voices it, but that does not make the reciter the one being praised.

  2. 2What is being requested in Al-Fatihah 1:6?

Answer: Guidance. The request in this verse concerns guidance: "Show us the straight path". Forgiveness and protection are different requests; they are not the request stated in 1:6.

  3. 3Which subject is stated in Al-Ikhlas 112:1?

Answer: Allah's oneness. The verse reads "Say: He is Allah, the One!", and it affirms Allah's oneness. The other choices describe requests, whereas the question asks about the statement in 112:1.

  4. 4Which idea does Al-Ikhlas 112:4 affirm?

Answer: No one is comparable to Him. The verse says "there is none comparable to Him", so the idea is that no one is comparable to Him. The other choices do not answer what is stated in 112:4.

  5. 5Which set matches the exception described in Al-Asr 103:3?

Answer: Belief, good deeds, mutual counsel in truth and endurance. The verse names belief and good deeds, and then "exhort one another to truth and exhort one another to endurance". Stopping after the first two leaves out part of the verse. This grouping is our learning aid.

  6. 6What relationship appears in the counsel described in Al-Asr 103:3?

Answer: People urging one another. The wording is "exhort one another to truth and exhort one another to endurance". Mutual counsel means people urging one another. Reflection alone does not capture that relationship, and the verse does not describe a financial exchange.

  7. 7What is the speaker seeking in the opening of Al-Falaq?

Answer: Seeking Allah's protection from harm. The opening reads "I seek refuge in the Lord of the Daybreak", so the speaker seeks refuge with the Lord of daybreak. The verses that follow name the evils from which protection is sought. Guidance and forgiveness for parents are different requests.

  8. 8Which two groups are named at the end of An-Nas?

Answer: Jinn and mankind. The final verse reads "Of the jinn and of mankind", naming jinn and humankind. The other pairs do not reproduce the two groups named at the end of this passage.

  9. 9What is the test connected with death and life in Al-Mulk 67:2?

Answer: Which of you is best in conduct. The verse states the test: "which of you is best in conduct". The test concerns conduct, the deeds a person does. The verse does not describe a competition for wealth or length of life, and this quiz does not measure that test.

  10. 10Which statement about Allah belongs to Ayat al-Kursi (the Verse of the Throne, Al-Baqarah 2:255)?

Answer: Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Allah. Al-Baqarah 2:255 reads "Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him", so this statement belongs to that verse. The question asks about that verse, rather than matching any statement about a different passage.

What do the passages say?

The Arabic is the Tanzil text and the English is the adapted Pickthall translation, the same wording the explanations quote.

Al-Fatihah 1:2Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds...

Al-Fatihah 1:6Show us the straight path...

Al-Ikhlas 112:1Say: He is Allah, the One!

Al-Ikhlas 112:4And there is none comparable to Him.

Al-Asr 103:3Save those who believe and do good works, and exhort one another to truth and exhort one another to endurance.

Al-Falaq 113:1 to 5Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the Daybreak From the evil of that which He created; From the evil of the darkness when it is intense, And from the evil of malignant witchcraft, And from the evil of the envier when he envies.

An-Nas 114:1 to 6Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, The King of mankind, The God of mankind, From the evil of the sneaking whisperer, Who whispers in the hearts of mankind, Of the jinn and of mankind.

Al-Mulk 67:2Who has created life and death that He may try you which of you is best in conduct; and He is the Mighty, the Forgiving...

Al-Baqarah 2:255Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Alive, the Self-Sustaining. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. Who is he that intercedes with Him except by His leave? He knows that which is in front of them and that which is behind them, while they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He will. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and He is never weary of preserving them. He is the Sublime, the Tremendous.

What should I revisit afterwards?

Pick a question you wanted to check and read its passage again. Explain in one sentence why the selected answer fits. This is our suggested study exercise, not a prescribed religious practice or a promised memory technique.

Each comprehension gap and the lesson to read next
If you want to revisitRead next
Praise and the request for guidanceAl-Fatihah
Allah's oneness and having no equalAl-Ikhlas
The exception and the counsel in Al-AsrSurah Al-Asr
The test of conduct in Al-MulkAl-Mulk
The two refuge passagesAl-Falaq and An-Nas
The statement about slumber and sleepAyat al-Kursi

An answer you changed is a useful place to begin another reading. The quiz looks only at answers to these questions. It says nothing about religious rank, sincerity or the value of a person's worship.

Is this a recitation or pronunciation test?

No. The exercise checks comprehension of selected passages. It does not assess Arabic pronunciation or tajweed, the rules used in Quran recitation. There is no audio on this page. For help with how you recite, learn with a teacher who can listen to you.

Questions people ask

Is this Quran quiz a translation of the Quran?

No. The questions and answer choices are a learning aid. The passages earlier on this page show the Arabic from the Tanzil copy and the English from the adapted Pickthall translation, which is credited in Sources.

Does the quiz give a score for faith?

No. At the end, the quiz counts how many answers were right on this page. That count covers comprehension only. It is not a score for faith, sincerity or worship, and the quiz does not save it.

Can I use this quiz with a child or a study partner?

Yes. Ask which part of the passage supports the choice, and say "I want to check" before you pick an answer. There is no time limit and no need to turn it into a competition.
