About Ilmwell
Ilmwell is a guide to the practice and beliefs of Islam for anyone starting out, coming back, or simply curious. Every claim carries its source, and where the four Sunni schools differ, you see all four.

What Ilmwell covers
Eight volumes, written one guide at a time: Start at Alif; Prayer and Purification; Quran and Surahs; Duas, Remembrance and Phrases; Prophets and Islamic History; Hadith and Stories; The Unseen and the Hereafter; and Ramadan and the Islamic Year. Alongside them sit a small set of tools, starting with a zakat calculator.
Ilmwell follows Sunni Islam and gives the Hanafi, Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali positions side by side. None of the four is presented as the only answer or shown as wrong.
Who writes it
Ilmwell is written and edited by Haroon Ali, the pen name of Ilmwell's editor, a British Muslim writing for readers who are starting out or coming back. Haroon studied Islamic studies and is still a student of knowledge, passionate about the deen (the religion) and about sport. He enjoys grappling and archery.
Each guide carries a short note from Haroon about a real moment from his own life where the topic came alive. The sources carry the religion; his note is only his experience.
Every page is checked against its sources and approved by the editor before it goes live. The date of the last source check is shown under each guide's title.
A few of the guides he has written: How to perform wudu, Sabr, The Kaaba, Surah Quraish, What is a hadith?, The Hijrah, Jannah and Mashallah.
How we work
- Quran text is reproduced exactly from the Tanzil Project, and every verse shows its surah and number.
- Hadith show their collection, their number and their grade, and link to the collection so you can read them yourself.
- Where scholars differ, we say who holds which view and where it is written.
- Every guide ends with a list of its sources, and nothing is added from memory.
- Our method is set out in full on How we source.
What we never do
- We do not issue fatwas. Ilmwell explains and attributes. For a ruling on your own situation, ask a qualified scholar you trust.
- We do not show any prophet, companion or angel in images or video.
- We do not invent stories, sayings or numbers to fill a page.
