Levels of Jannah: what the sources report

Ranks in Paradise, its gates and the seven heavens are separate subjects in the sources. Here is what each one says, with its reference and grade.

The short answer

Levels of Jannah are ranks in Paradise, separate from its eight gates and from the seven heavens. Sahih al-Bukhari 2790, graded sahih (authentic), mentions 100 ranks prepared for those who fight in Allah's cause. It gives no numbered list, and it does not say these are all the ranks of Paradise.

How many levels of Jannah are there?

Sahih al-Bukhari 2790, graded sahih, is a report from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him. In it, the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, says that Paradise has 100 ranks, which Allah prepared for the mujahidin, those who strive in His way.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2790

إِنَّ فِي الْجَنَّةِ مِائَةَ دَرَجَةٍ أَعَدَّهَا اللَّهُ لِلْمُجَاهِدِينَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ

inna fi l-jannati mi'ata darajatin a'addahā llāhu li-l-mujāhidīna fī sabīli llāh

Paradise has a hundred degrees, which Allah prepared for those who strive in His way.

1AuthenticSahih al-Bukhari 2790

The report adds that the distance between two ranks is like the distance between the heaven and the earth.

The report begins with a condition. Whoever believes in Allah and His Messenger, establishes prayer and fasts Ramadan has Paradise as his due from Allah, whether he fights in Allah's cause or stays in the land where he was born. The people then asked whether they should give this good news to others, and the answer is the hundred ranks. The entry and the ranks are both in the same report, so the number keeps its context: it is about the mujahidin.

Ibn Hajar, in Fath al-Bari (his commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari), vol. 6, p. 16 of the electronic edition, says that the context of this report does not rule out other ranks in Paradise, prepared for people other than the mujahidin, below the rank of the mujahidin. 3

Ibn Hajar gives no alternative total and names no other ranks, and he adds that someone who did not fight may reach the mujahidin's degree through sincere intention or deeds of equal worth, so this page gives neither. The report gives 100 for the mujahidin. It does not give a total for all of Paradise.

What the 100-rank report says, and does not say

  • It says: Paradise has 100 ranks, prepared by Allah for the mujahidin, and the distance between two ranks is like the distance between the heaven and the earth.
  • It does not say: that these are all the ranks; what their names are; or which person is in which rank.

What does the Quran say about ranks?

Al-Ahqaf 46:19 uses the word darajat, ranks, and says that for all there are ranks from what they did. It says they will be paid for their deeds, and that they will not be wronged.

Al-Ahqaf 46:19And for all there will be ranks from what they do, that He may pay them for their deeds; and they will not be wronged.

The verse does not name Paradise, and it gives no number. The verse links ranks with deeds.

Are there seven levels of Jannah?

The seven in Al-Mulk 67:3 counts heavens, not ranks of Paradise. The verse describes Allah's creation of seven heavens.

Al-Mulk 67:3Who has created seven heavens in harmony. You (Muhammad) can see no fault in the Beneficent One's creation; then look again: Can you see any rifts?

A heading such as "the seven heavens" needs a different reference from a claim about the ranks of Paradise. Using one for the other changes what the source is discussing.

Are the eight gates also eight levels?

The report about eight gates speaks of gates, not ranks. Sahl ibn Sa'd, may Allah be pleased with him, reports the Prophet saying that Paradise has eight gates, and that one of them, called al-Rayyan, is entered only by those who fast (Sahih al-Bukhari 3257, graded sahih).

Sahih al-Bukhari 3257

فِي الْجَنَّةِ ثَمَانِيَةُ أَبْوَابٍ، فِيهَا باب يُسَمَّى الرَّيَّانَ لاَ يَدْخُلُهُ إِلاَّ الصَّائِمُونَ

fī l-jannati thamāniyatu abwāb, fīhā bābun yusammā r-rayyāna lā yadkhuluhu illā ṣ-ṣāʾimūn

Paradise has eight gates, and among them is a gate called al-Rayyan; only the fasting enter it.

2AuthenticSahih al-Bukhari 3257

The two reports, both graded sahih, use different words. Sahih al-Bukhari 3257 says abwab, gates. Sahih al-Bukhari 2790 says daraja, degree, which this page calls a rank. The number eight belongs to the gates, so it cannot be used to count ranks.

What does Al-Firdaus mean in this report?

Sahih al-Bukhari 2790, graded sahih, tells listeners to ask Allah for al-Firdaus when they ask Him for something. The report calls it the middlemost (awsat) and the highest (a'la) part of Paradise.

The passage gives a request to make. It does not place a particular person in a rank, and it gives no way to work out one's own rank. Those claims would need evidence beyond this passage.

The same narration has a line, introduced by the narrator's "I think", about the Throne of the Merciful above al-Firdaus and the rivers of Paradise flowing from al-Firdaus. The narrator introduces that line with "I think", so it is reported as the Prophet's words with the narrator's doubt. This page does not rely on it. A line at the end of the narration, through Muhammad ibn Fulayh and his father, gives the Throne clause without "I think".

For a wider introduction to Paradise, see Jannah and Jannatul Firdaus. Keep a description of Paradise separate from any claim to know a person's final place in it.

How can I check a chart of Jannah's levels?

Ask for a reference beside each number and name, and check whether the source is about ranks, gates or heavens. A number taken from another category does not support a chart of levels. The eight in Sahih al-Bukhari 3257, graded sahih, cannot make an eight-level table, and the seven heavens cannot become seven named ranks.

These are checks on these particular claims. They do not judge every other report or every chart. For a question about a particular interpretation, or for your own situation, ask a scholar you trust, and give them the exact reference.

Someone shared a colourful chart of the levels of Jannah in our family group chat, each level with a number beside it. I tried to find where the numbers came from and could not trace half of them. It made me much more careful before forwarding anything with a nice design.

Every claim on this page comes from one of these. Gradings are reported with the scholar's name; we do not grade hadith ourselves.

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet said Paradise has a hundred degrees that Allah prepared for those who strive in His way (al-mujahidin), the distance between two degrees like that between the heaven and the earth; and to ask Allah for al-Firdaus, the awsat and the highest (a'la) of Paradise. A line introduced by 'I think' (urahu) adds that above it is the Throne of al-Rahman and from it the rivers of Paradise burst forth; Muhammad ibn Fulayh from his father gives 'and above it is the Throne of al-Rahman'.
