The short answer
The dua after eating in Jami at-Tirmidhi 3458 (graded differently) is Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi at'amani hadha wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah. Say Bismillah before eating: Sahih al-Bukhari 5376 records a boy at the dish being told to mention Allah's name. If you forget at the start, see the separate wording from Sunan Abi Dawud 3767 below.
What do you say before eating?
Say Bismillah, meaning "in the name of Allah". In Sahih al-Bukhari 5376, 'Umar ibn Abi Salamah, may Allah be pleased with him, reports that as a boy in the care of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, his hand wandered around the dish while he ate. The Prophet told him to mention Allah's name, eat with his right hand and eat from the part of the dish nearest him.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5376
سَمِّ اللَّهَ
Sammi Allāha.
Mention the name of Allah.
4AuthenticSahih al-Bukhari 5376
A hadith is a transmitted report about the Prophet, and each one here has its own reference. For more on the phrase itself, see Bismillah.
A longer report in Sunan Ibn Majah 3264 adds that each person eating should say Bismillah. It is graded differently, so it supports this advice rather than being the basis for it. Of the 32 gradings listed for it, 24 accept it as sound or as strengthened by other reports, one calls this particular chain disconnected, and seven are remarks.
Sunan Ibn Majah 3264, graded differently
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
Bismillāh.
In the name of Allah.
What if you forget Bismillah?
If you remember after you have started eating, say the wording below. It comes from Sunan Abi Dawud 3767, which sunnah.com grades sahih. The other graders in its record accept it as sahih or hasan, and the sources list below names each grader.
Sunan Abi Dawud 3767, graded sahih
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ
Bismillāhi awwalahū wa ākhirah.
In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end.
3AuthenticSunan Abi Dawud 3767
Sunan Ibn Majah 3264 gives a near-identical wording, Bismillah fi awwalihi wa akhirih, but it is graded differently, so it does not carry this answer alone. See the note under "What do you say before eating?"
What is the dua after eating?
This is also the dua for finishing food. Sahl ibn Mu'adh narrated from his father that the Prophet said whoever eats food and then says these words has his past sins forgiven. The report does not add forgiveness of future sins, and gives no count. The collection's own comment on it is hasan gharib (hasan meaning good, gharib meaning reported through one chain). Across all 40 gradings listed, 29 accept it, two call its chain weak or closer to weak, and nine are remarks, several of them about two narrators in the chain.
Jami at-Tirmidhi 3458
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هَذَا وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلاَ قُوَّةٍ
Al-ḥamdu lillāhi lladhī aṭʿamanī hādhā wa razaqanīhi min ghayri ḥawlin minnī wa lā quwwah.
Praise belongs to Allah, who fed me this and provided it for me, without any might or power of my own.
1Graded differently Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3458
Arabic reads right to left, so the first word is on the right.
- الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِal-ḥamdu lillāhpraise belongs to Allah
- الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هَذَاalladhī aṭʿamanī hādhāwho fed me this
- وَرَزَقَنِيهِwa razaqanīhiand provided it for me
- مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلاَ قُوَّةٍmin ghayri ḥawlin minnī wa lā quwwahwithout any might or power of my own
Can you simply say Alhamdulillah after food or water?
Alhamdulillah means "praise belongs to Allah". In Sahih Muslim 2734, Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, reports that the Prophet said Allah is pleased with the servant who eats a meal and praises Him for it, or drinks a drink and praises Him for it. That is praise after both food and drink. It does not give a separate water-only wording.
5AuthenticSahih Muslim 2734
So the dua after drinking water that these reports support is praise, Alhamdulillah. A longer sentence presented as required for every drink needs its own reference. See Alhamdulillah for the phrase.
Another after-meal wording
Abu Umamah, may Allah be pleased with him, reports that when the Prophet raised his dining sheet he used to say the words below, and the report continues with further phrases, which this page does not print.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5458, the opening of the wording
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا طَيِّبًا مُبَارَكًا فِيهِ
Al-ḥamdu lillāhi kathīran ṭayyiban mubārakan fīh.
Praise be to Allah: much praise, good and blessed.
6AuthenticSahih al-Bukhari 5458
Are all familiar after-meal duas equally well supported?
No. Familiarity does not tell you a narration's grade. These are separate reports, and each needs its own reference.
| Wording | Grade | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi at'amani hadha wa razaqanihi ... | Graded differently: 29 of 40 gradings accept it and 2 call it weak or closer to weak. It carries the report about past sins | Tirmidhi 3458 |
| Alhamdu lillahi kathiran tayyiban mubarakan fihi ... | Sahih | Bukhari 5458 |
| Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi at'amana wa saqana wa ja'alana muslimin | Graded differently: 17 gradings from 5 graders call it weak, and 4 gradings from 2 graders accept it | Abu Dawud 3850 |
The last wording means "praise to Allah who fed us, gave us drink and made us Muslims".
Sunan Abi Dawud 3850, graded differently
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مُسْلِمِينَ
Al-ḥamdu lillāhi lladhī aṭʿamanā wa saqānā wa jaʿalanā muslimīn.
Praise to Allah, who fed us, gave us drink and made us Muslims.
7Graded differently Sunan Abi Dawud 3850
Several gradings in its record call it weak, and a smaller group accept it; the sources list shows who graded it which way. The weak gradings concern how it is transmitted as a report about the Prophet. Fabricated is the worst kind of weak report, and not every weak report is fabricated: Ibn al-Salah defines the fabricated report as the invented one, the worst of the weak reports, unlike other weak reports whose truth is possible (source 8). Whether to use its words as your own thanks is a separate question for a scholar.
If you learnt that wording as a child, there is no need to turn the dinner table into an argument. The useful next step is to know what each reference supports and to learn wording with clearly identified evidence.
In our house nobody touched the food until someone said Bismillah, and what came after the meal was a quick murmur nobody explained. I only learnt there was a full dua for after eating in my teens, and I put it on a sticky note on the fridge.
Try it: what would you say?
Pick an answer; each one explains itself.
1You are about to eat. What do you say?
Answer: Bismillah. Sahih al-Bukhari 5376 has the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, tell a boy at the dish to mention Allah's name before eating. Bismillah is the phrase for mentioning Allah's name. Source 4
2You forgot to say Bismillah at the start and remember halfway through. Which wording does Abu Dawud 3767 give?
Answer: Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu. Sunan Abi Dawud 3767, graded sahih on sunnah.com, gives "In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end". Source 3
3Does the report about praising Allah include drinking?
Answer: Yes, eating and drinking. Sahih Muslim 2734 names both: the servant who eats a meal and praises Allah for it, or drinks a drink and praises Him for it. Source 5
